Notion to Markdown
Convert Notion pages and block selections to clean Markdown — for docs sites, blogs, llms.txt, or AI knowledge bases.
How to convert Notion to Markdown
- In Notion, select the blocks you want to convert (or open the whole page)
- Click the "..." menu at the top of the page or the selection
- Choose "Copy as plain text" — this strips Notion-specific formatting and gives you clean text
- Paste here and click Convert
- Alternative: Notion → "..." → Export → Markdown & CSV (gives you a .md file directly, no conversion needed)

How do I convert a Notion page to Markdown?
Two methods, depending on whether you want one page or many.
Method 1 (one page, fast): Open the Notion page, select the blocks (or Cmd+A for the whole page), click the "..." menu at the top of the selection, choose "Copy as plain text", and paste into this converter. The tool detects headings, bullets, numbered lists, and paragraph breaks from the structure cues in the pasted text.
Method 2 (one or many pages, more accurate): In Notion, click the "..." menu at the top of the page (or workspace), choose Export, select "Markdown & CSV". You get a .zip with each page as a .md file inside. The structure (including nested toggles and database properties) is preserved much better than the copy-paste path.
For migrating an entire Notion workspace to a new docs site (Mintlify, Docusaurus, Astro), use Method 2. For converting one or two pages on the fly, this tool is faster.
Does Notion have a built-in Markdown export?
Yes — and it is surprisingly good. Click the "..." menu at the top of any Notion page, choose Export, select "Markdown & CSV". You get a .zip with one .md file per exported page, plus any embedded CSVs as separate files.
What it preserves: headings, bullet and numbered lists (with nesting), code blocks, links, images (as references to a /images/ folder in the zip), tables (as Markdown pipe tables), callouts (as blockquotes), and toggles (as collapsible <details> sections).
What it does not preserve perfectly: database views (everything becomes a table), embedded videos and PDFs (rendered as links), synced blocks (each copy gets its own duplicate), and custom block types from third-party Notion integrations.
For AI knowledge bases and docs migrations, Method 2 (the Notion-built-in export) is the right starting point. Use this paste-based converter for one-offs.
How do I migrate an entire Notion workspace to a docs site?
Three steps:
(1) Export from Notion. "..." menu at the workspace level → Export → "Everything" → Markdown & CSV. You get a large .zip with one .md file per page, organized in folders that match your Notion sidebar hierarchy.
(2) Clean up the export. Notion's export is usually 90% clean but needs touch-ups: remove "Created by" metadata blocks, fix any broken database links (Notion-style page references like [page name](id) need to be remapped to your new URL structure), and delete archived or template pages you do not want to publish.
(3) Drop into your docs site. For Mintlify, Docusaurus, or Astro Starlight, the .md files are usually drop-in compatible — copy them into your docs source folder, adjust frontmatter, and they render. For more involved migrations, write a small script to walk the export folder and transform frontmatter as needed.
For AI knowledge bases (Hyperleap AI included), you can usually skip Step 3 — drop the unzipped Markdown files into the agent's knowledge base directly and it indexes them.
Why use Markdown instead of keeping content in Notion?
Notion is a great editor and team workspace. It is a worse choice as a "source of truth" for content that needs to be:
(1) Public-facing (a docs site or blog). Notion's "publish to web" is fine for one-off pages, but you lose control over URL structure, performance, SEO, and design.
(2) Versioned alongside your code. Markdown in a Git repo gives you reviewable changes, branch-based experimentation, and the same workflow you use for code. Notion's history is opaque and per-page.
(3) Indexable by AI agents. Most AI knowledge-base ingestors handle Markdown files better than Notion's API (which is rate-limited, paginated, and requires per-workspace credentials). Markdown files are a flat directory you can re-index in seconds.
A common pattern: write and edit in Notion (because the editor is great), but export to Markdown and store in Git for the canonical version. Re-export when you make significant changes.
